Hydrogen FACTS & HYPE !

Hydrogen:  there is much controversy and debate among the science community about its usefulness and readiness at this time.  Many governments, desperate to deal with the climate think it is a ‘silver bullet’.  With the current technology its only efficient use is to power steel plants

The Everwind plan is to use Pt Tupper to make hydrogen using its turbines in the 5 counties and the NS Grid to get it to Pt Tupper.  By using the NS grid, which is 71% fossil fueled, to transport it’s wind power it cannot be defined as ‘green’ .

The hydrogen would then be converted to ammonia for shipment to Germany where it will most likely be used as fertilizer.  But a large percentage of the ammonia is lost in the shipping and converting to fertilizer as well as the amount of fossil fuel used in the conversions and shipping.  No matter what Everwind says, it is NOT a green project

Julia Levin Associate Director, Environmental Defence Canada says “EverWind’s project “seems ridiculous” for Nova Scotia… A province that has not gotten its grid off coal, and is building new wind power to waste most of that to create hydrogen, to waste more of that to make ammonia to ship overseas,” Levin tells J. This sentiment was echoed by 3 speakers on CBC Atlantic Voice Nov.19,2023  https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-3/clip/16024121

Some energy experts say green hydrogen’s business rationale is mostly hype & diverting crucial investment away from surer emissions-reduction technologies, presenting a threat to climate action. And Feds gave $125 million Nov 17,2023 to Everwind for Pt Tupper construction - that could have bought over 15,000 heat pumps for Nova Scotians
